Everyone wants the operating system to perform better and run on the fly. As the days past by and loads of application being installed Microsoft’s operating system tends to get slower. Lets take a look how can you make your Windows 7 operating system a flying machine.
Faster Startup
After applications get installed , many of them are prone to get initialized at startup with some background daemon. Not each application is required to get loaded on memory at startup. It is recommended to block these unwanted programs at start up. We can use msconfig to block unwanted programs to start during boot process. Lets go through below steps
1. Press Windows Key + R , It will open up Run dialog
2. Type msconfig and press enter
3. It will open microsoft configurator , Press the Startup tab , Here uncheck those programs which you dont want to be initialized at startup. Screen will look like below image
In the above screen you can see we have disabled some unwanted service like Adobe acrobat reader and Adobe CS6.
Keep away from Malware, Adware and Viruses
Good regularly updated antivirus is a must for Windows , You must have heard it many times but to save money many of them do not install it . But there are some free ones are also which are good too eg. AVG , avira antivir etc.
Ensure that it is updated regularly . But most of the antivirus are still ineffective in blocking all adwares. Adwares are unwanted programs which many not harm your underlying software but may eat your performance and network bandwidth by showing unwanted advertisments. Choice of selection of installing the right software should also be kept in mind.
Sacrifice visual appeal for performance
Click the Start button 
, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type Performance Information and Tools, and then, in the list of results, click Performance Information and Tools.
Then click on “adjust visual effect” , Select “adjust for better performance” option
Defragment you disk regularly
Many people don’t know that disk is the slowest processing system in your computer and no matter how fast is your processor or memory overall speed is determined by slowest device utilization.
When a file is stored physically on disk it is distributed in chunks and at the time of getting saved on disk it not always follow the sequence. Disk spindle has to make many moves to get the data slowing down the system while reading the data. Defragmentation Utility reallocates these chunks so that they can get closer and Read seek time gets reduced.
Click the Start button , In the search box, type Disk Defragmenter then click on it , Then You can select the desired drive to defragment.
Run Windows Update regularly
Every Software comes with functionality , performance and security bugs. Updates are necessary to fix these and can result in hige performance gain.
There are other ways also like disabling search indexes , registry tweaks etc but these changes are costly . For example disabling search index will result in very slower search . For some softwares using search API’s it will affect performace heavily.
